Breaking History books offer a front row seat to history as it broke

Breaking History books offer a front row seat to history as it broke (like “breaking news”) and give the blow-by-blow of historical discovery—what we learned, when we learned it, who made the discovery, and how. Vanished! is an illustrated tour of history’s most confounding cases of disappearance from Amelia Earhart to Jimmy Hoffa; DB Cooper; Alcatraz escapists Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Algin; Jim Thompson; Judge Joseph Force Crater; and more. Starting with the first 30 days surrounding each incident, and then looking at efforts up to this very day to solve each case, this book covers in photos and text history’s most perplexing vanishings. Yes, this is more of a coffee table book that doesn't dig super deep into each mystery but it does have a lot going for it. If you love TV shows like Unsolved Mysteries or In Search Of this book will be really fun to peruse. Some of these cases are more "unsolved" than others but they are all fascinating to learn more about. They range from the very well known to much lesser known occurrences. One really big plus about this book is that it was published in 2018 so it is really up to date on its information and references very recent films, shows and books that relate to each mystery. Let's take a look at what is covered here... The book is divided into seven main sections, each grouping mysteries under a similar theme together. The first section is called "The Big Three" and covers perhaps the three most talked about, written about and researched unsolved mysteries of modern times. Missing aviator, Amelia Earhart, missing oceangoing vessel the Mary Celeste and missing gangster Jimmy Hoffa. For fans of this type of material, you have probably already read the information contained here. But what's presented is clear and concise and as with the rest of the book, there are fascinating photos and news clippings included. Some of which I had never seen. Each of these gets about 10-11 pages a piece. The next section is entitled "The First Disappearance" and has just one entry. The lost Roanoke Colony of North Carolina. This is indeed a creepy and endlessly fascinating case that is still in the news currently with the provenance of the so-called "Virginia Dare stones" being reconsidered by researchers and scientists. Like many of the cases covered in this book, the Roanoke Colony seems to be fodder for every generation to obsess over and ponder with the same chill up their collective spines. As mentioned in this volume a recent season of American Horror Story used the mythos of this mystery as its inspiration. I think one reason this one will never go away is its firm place in not just American history but the very founding of the nation by European settlers, which as evidenced by this tale - did not always go according to plan. The next section is titled "The Rich and Famous" and covers four cases from 1812 to 1970 - Theodosia Burr Alston (daughter of Vice President Aaron burr) who was lost at sea, Dorothy Arnold, socialite and heiress who disappeared while walking on Fifth Avenue in NYC, Jim Thompson the "Thai Silk King" who disappeared while on a walk in Malaysia and Sean Flynn, son of Errol Flynn and war photojournalist who disappeared during the early days of the Vietnam War. These are all very interesting cases but are not explored in depth here. The next section is titled "The Explorers" and details the ill-fated ventures of arctic explorer John Franklin and jungle explorer Percy Fawcett. Both of these incidents are very popular in the current zeitgeist with Franklin being the focus of Dan Simmons' fantastic book The Terror, which a current TV show is now based on - airing on AMC. Fawcett has been similarly recently remembered by the book (and film) The Lost City of Z. Next up is a focus on the infamous Bermuda Triangle, focusing on Flight 19 (a group of five Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers that disappeared over the Bermuda Triangle on December 5, 1945 after losing contact) and the USS Cyclops (a Proteus class cargo ship that disappeared without a trace within the area known as the Bermuda Triangle some time after March 4th, 1918 and which remains the single largest loss of life in U.S. Naval history not directly involving combat.) Then we have a section centered around two famously missing writers Ambrose Bierce (Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge) and Solomon Northup (12 Years a Slave). Lastly is a lengthy section on "Rogues and Rebels" which covers Louis Le Prince (the inventor of the motion picture), Judge Joseph Force Crater (A Tammany Hall-era New York State Supreme Court Justice), The three Alcatraz escapees - Frank Morris, John Anglin and Clarence Anglin, infamous hijacker "D.B. Cooper" and finally, Hunter S. Thompson sidekick, novelist and activist Oscar Zeta Acosta. Overall this is a pretty great selection of mysterious disappearances, strange occurrences and just downright head-scratching puzzles, some of which have been solved (to an extent) and some of which may never be sorted out. If you are looking for a reference book or overview of some of the most famous unsolved mysteries and disappearances through history, this book is a standout. As mentioned, lots of great pictures and supporting material here as well as good, solid basic info about each case. Well researched and presented, this would make a great addition to a library or as a gift. Solid purchase.
